Supermarkets in Amsterdam

From Albert Heijn, Jumbo through to Lidl and Aldi

Even if you are staying in a hotel, knowing where the supermarkets in Amsterdam are can be helpful. If you are visiting on a budget and self-catering or perhaps on a B&B basis, then a good supermarket will save you a lot of money.

Amsterdam like any major city is full of supermarkets. However, the supermarkets here are not huge hypermarket style shops. Amsterdam is much smaller and the supermarkets are smaller too. As most people walk around Amsterdam or cycle around town, driving to a big supermarket is usually out of the question, so trips tend to be little and often, which is probably more than enough for a short term visitor.

As the stores are smaller this means they will focus more on the staple food and drink and perhaps have a little less choice in certain areas.

Bring your own bag

Keeping up with looking after the environment, shops will expect you to bring your own bag or will sell you a bag for life style bag with your shopping. Free plastic bags are a thing of the past now (thankfully).
