There are so many things to do in The Hague. You can visit beaches and enjoy the ocean, explore the historic centre, discover museums and art galleries, see red deer in an ancient forest and visit the Peace Palace.

Peace Palace

The International Court of Justice and Permanent Court of Arbitration known as the Peace Palace is housed in a beautiful building built to represent humanity’s hopes for a better world. Most visitors will just be able to enjoy viewing the building from outside, going to the visitors centre and watching the eternal flame. These tour dates vary and usually sell-out rapidly. Check the official Peace Palace website for details.

Madurodam

This is a minitaure park located in the Scheveningen district of The Hague. It is a tourist attraction due to the ability to ‘visit’ the whole of the Netherlands in one place. It features minature landmarks and historic cities and is a good place to visit with children. All the proceeds from Madurodam go to charities in the Netherlands.

Binnenhof

Home of the Dutch parliament and office of the prime minister. This is a beautiful collection of buildings located on the waterside, with a gothic 13th century castle as its iconic centre. You can walk around enjoying the architecture, central square and fountain and find pavement cafes to recharge in. It is close to the central station and museums and one of the prettiest places in the Netherlands for photos.

Mauritshuis Museum

Museum featuring Dutch Golden Age paintings including work by Vermeer, Rembrandt, Hals, Steen and many more. This is where to come if you want to see the masterpieces such as Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Goldfinch by Fabritus, The Bull by Potter and The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp by Rembrandt. You can visit independently or take a guided tour. Mauritshuis details and tickets

Escher in the Palace

Escher is one of our favourite artists and this museum showcases his graphic artwork that will delight old and young alike. As this museum is dedicated to the artist, you can gain a really deep insight into his life and work. You can visit independently or take a guided tour to learn much more about what you are seeing. Kunstmuseum Den Haag

This museum has a very large Mondrian collection as part of over 160,000 artworks. It has focus on fine art, photography, decorative arts, fashion and musical instruments. Scheveningen and Kijkduin

If you are looking for a beach in the Netherlands, these are two of the most popular you can find. Many tourists will visit in the summer months with Scheveningen having a long sandy beach, pier, lighthouse and esplanade. It is popular for watersports including windsurfing, surfing and kiteboarding.

Kijkduin is a smaller resort than Scheveningen but still has a wide sandy beach. It is located close to an extensive dune area, so it is easy to find peace and quiet by taking a walk or bike ride. The area has shopping and restaurants and during the summer season beach restaurants. You can enjoy a beach break and be close to a major city in one place.
