What can I do at Botanical Garden Amsterdam
Hortus Botanicus is a place to explore, relax and reconnect with nature.
The grounds are beautiful and spacious and the glasshouses are warm, interesting and full of unique species of plants.
Orangery Cafe
There is a lovely cafe situated within an ancient national monument (the Orangery) which is a pretty unique place to stock up on cakes and coffee or enjoy lunch. The cafe is open from 10-5pm.
Hortus Store
A 17th century chalet style home has been adapted to house the Hortus Store, in here you’ll find plants, gardening tools, books, jewellery, art and stationary.
Greenhouses
There are four greenhouses to be found here. Perhaps the most famous is the Palm Greenhouse which is a protected monument and it’s roof you can see on plenty of images around Amsterdam. Unsurprisingly the greenhouse contains all manner of palm plants, pot plants and even some trees.
The butterfly greenhouse is a joyful place for kids and grown ups. All day long butterflies of tropical variety will flutter by and perch on the nearest plant or feeding station, great for pictures. The caterpillars are collected in this greenhouse and then grown on in a separate house. Once they turn into pupae they are returned so that the butterflies can fly freely when hatched.
The glassroom is used for education trips, lectures, talks and has a history of the botanical collection to explore at other times.
Finally there is the three climate greenhouse. This is a much more recent design (1993) and has three different climate zones, one for the desert, one for the tropics and one for the subtropics.
The Garden
There is a large pond in the garden, a semi-circle garden which is a great place to visit in the summer as the flowers cover the whole area and there is a medicine and herb garden (snippendaal) which harks back to the earliest days of the building, when the garden was planted to aid medicinial treatments.
