What will I see at Amsterdam Muiderslot Castle?
The castle is over 700 years old, so you will see and experience history everywhere you look. The castle has been left to almost ruin a couple of times in its lifetime, but fortunately restored to its former glory each time.
National Museum
In 1878, the castle became one of the first national museums in the Netherlands. Before this time it was used as private residence and even came close to being destroyed. King William I made sure this did not happen.
Count Floris V built the castle to levy tolls along the river Vecht where it met the Dutch South Sea. Ships using the river for trade found it impossible to avoid the castle and the levies.
Floris met a brutal end, murdered near the castle and his enemies destroyed most of the castle. It was rebuilt in 1370.
Gardens
The gardens at Muiderslot Castle are practical and beautiful. They were designed to provide food for the residents, but have also become a wonderful place to relax, re-charge and re-connect with nature.
They feature a Berceau (a green tunnel with natural windows), a vegatable garden (warmoeshof), herb garden (kruidhof), orchard and fortress gardens where planting is designed to help fortify and protect the castle itself.
Water and Moat
The castle is surrounded by a moat that helped protect it from invaders. A moat and drawbridge are iconic castle representations of the imagination, so it is no surprise to learn that Muiderslot Castle has featured in many historical films and TV series. There is a water shield attraction where you can go underground to learn more about the way water works with the castle in an interactive presentation.
Stage and Events
Music and theatre are regularly performed at the castle. This is a tradition dating back 400 years to the poet and then resident P.C. Hooft who would often have gatherings and parties to celebrate the arts.
There are also all sorts of other events that have ranged from picnics in the gardens, to yoga, readings, crafts and more.
Check for an updated agenda of the events at the castle.

Unfortunately the castle itself is not accessible to users of wheelchairs, rollator walkers or mobility scooters. Users of these can gain free access to the gardens, ramparts, courtyard and the tournament field.
Strollers are not allowed in the castle and can be stored at the entrance.
