Nieuwmarkt Amsterdam, translated as “New Market” in English, was created in the 17th Century. It was established as a marketplace where merchants, farmers, and craftsmen gathered to trade their wares. Over time, it evolved into a vibrant commercial hub that played a crucial role in Amsterdam’s growth as a trading city.
Nieuwmarkt’s location is ideal for visiting whilst exploring Amsterdam or even as a base while staying in Amsterdam. It is situated near the city center and close to the Amsterdam central railway station, making the rest of Amsterdam and further afield easily accessible. Nieuwmarkt Market
The heart of Nieuwmarkt is the bustling square that has been a center of commerce for centuries. The Nieuwmarkt Square, or “Nieuwmarktplein,” is home to an array of cafés, restaurants, and market stalls. On Saturdays, it hosts a lively organic food market, where locals and visitors alike can savor fresh produce and delicious street food.
On Sunday’s between May and October, you’ll find an antique fair with the opportunity to discover some hidden Dutch treasures.
You’ll find some market stalls in action every day but the full selection appears at the weekends. The market square though is full of restaurants and cafes so you can pick your favourite view and relax and recharge, knowing you are not far from your next attraction.
Nieuwmarkt Directions
Nieuwmarkt Square is a short walk from Centraal Station and is located in the heart of the old part of the city.
Perhaps the most popular way to arrive in Nieumarkt Square is using the Metro. Lines 51, 53 and 54 stop here. The stop here leads out very close by to the square and is one of the most popular stops of the Metro, as Nieuwmarkt is such a popular location for locals and vistors to fan out from.
Nieuwmarkt’s historical significance is only a part of its charm. Today, it is a neighborhood that seamlessly blends the old and the new, making it an irresistible destination for locals and visitors alike.

Nieumarkt De Waag
At the heart of Nieuwmarkt stands the Waag, a historic weighing house dating back to the 15th century. It is an imposing building, with its ornate architecture making it castle like in appearance. It is actually the oldest non-religious building in Amsterdam and is definitely worth visiting. It has served many purposes over time including a city gate as part of the walls of Amsterdam, a museum and a theatre.
Today, the upper floors are rented out and the Waag Society, an institution at the intersection of art, science, and technology reside here. At its ground floor is a lovely restaurant and cafe funnily enough called Restaurant-Cafe in de Waag.

Every April 27th, Nieuwmarkt and the entire city of Amsterdam come alive to celebrate King’s Day (Koningsdag). Festivities include street markets of which Nieuwmarkt is included, live music, and boat parades along the canals.

Red Light Jazz Festival
For jazz aficionados, the Red Light Jazz Festival has been running since 2014 and the whole area around the RLD including Nieuwmarkt comes alive with the sound of jazz, as local and international musicians take the stage for a weekend of memorable performances.
