Straat Museum

Street Art Museum Amsterdam

The Straat Museum or Street Art Museum Amsterdam is one of our favourite Amsterdam museums. The scale of the venue, the sheer size of the artworks and the feeling of modernity as you explore are reasons to visit alone.

We also love how you can get there by the Amsterdam ferry. A free ferry takes you to NDSM in 15 minutes and gives you a free sightseeing experience from the River IJ as you go. A lot of frees in that sentence. Alas the museum is not free, but is in our opinion totally worth the admission price.

From the back of Central Station you’ll see the ferries all docked. Find the one named NDSM-Werf (usually furthest left). It’ll take 15 minutes to make the trip and runs every 15 minutes in peak times and every half an hour (15′ or 45′) at other times.

The NDSM ferry takes you to within a very short distance of Straat Museum. You will see the street art portrait of Anne Frank on the side of the building as you approach the dock, so it’s very easy to make your way there once you disembark.

There is another free ferry sailing from the Pontsteiger. This takes 7 minutes and again during peak times is every 15 minutes, but off peak is every half an hour (14′ & 44′).

You can also get there by bus from Central Station using the 391 bus towards Zaandam Zaanse Schans. Another bus No. 394 towards Zaandam Station will also get you there. You need to alight at the Klaprozenweg/Atatürk bus stop.

Arriving by bus will leave you with around a 5 minute walk to the museum.

What will I see at STRAAT Museum?

Entering Street Museum you’ll be greeted by what feels like a gigantic warehouse. However, this is no grey space, but rather an explosion of modern art and colour adorning the walls, rising up from the floor and in places expecting interaction.

Street art has long been in the mainstream and some may say it belongs on the street but Street Museum tries to celebrate street artists and educate visitors on the stories behind the art. Currently there are over 160 artworks on display in Street Museum with a mix of famous and not yet famous artists.

How long will I need at Street Museum?

Did we mention the space is big, I think we did. You can see the scale in our pictures so you’ll want plenty of time to wander around and explore. There is also a large cafe overlooking the expanse of art and a gantry which gives nice views of everything together, so a good couple of hours or more are needed here.

Best way to view Street Museum Amsterdam

You enter on the ground floor and bright colours rush towards you from the nearest giant canvases. As you walk we found overselves looking more at the ground level art which kind of leads you from one to the next. Craning our heads upwards we could view the art high above, but the perspective is a bit off like this when you are up close.

The spaciousness allows you to retreat and see the art from further away which can totally change your opinion or focus. There is also a first floor with the cafe and a gantry where you can see all the art in one giant landscape and look at the higher positioned art more at its level.

So, this is a museum to explore from lots of different angles, with each new angle giving you something different to enjoy. Kids will love it.

What type of art is shown at STRAAT Museum?

Showcasing street art and graffiti is the sole purpose of Street Museum Amsterdam. It is a place designed to show street art in an edgy more urban environment. As you arrive you’ll see street art on the walls outside and on the building itself.

straat-museum-entrance-bikes-min

There are a wide variety of styles and techniques on show and it is very modern art space. If you need a break from classics like Van Gogh Museum then this is a real antedote.

The original collection holds 160 artworks commissioned for the museum from International artists and the smaller gallery focuses on solo shows and exploration in more detail of the stories behind the art.

AMSTERDAM GRAFFITI COMING OF AGE

With Banksy fame and the world embracing street art, it is no surprise to find a graffiti museum collecting and displaying these inspiring, meaningful artworks for people to enjoy.

Although it has called itself a museum, it really is one giant art gallery that is just lovely to wander around and enjoy. With the amount of available space and passion of the people running Straat Museum it will only grow in popularity and rightly so.

NDSM is also a creative hub of Amsterdam, making the Street Museum very well placed for anyone making the trip across the River IJ.

Street Art Museum Amsterdam accessibility

The whole ground floor is totally accessible although the floor can be a bit uneven in places.

There is a lift to the cafe and gallery. Unfortunately the panoramic deck which gives you lovely views across the whole space is not yet wheelchair accessible.
