What is the best time to see tulips in Amsterdam
Spring is the best time for tulips, so from March through to May. However, the best time to see the tulips in Holland is usually mid-April to early May. It is worth noting that the weather will have something to say on this. Depending on how cold or warm the Winter is and the subsequent Spring, the tulips may bloom earlier or later.
At Keukenhof Gardens for example, they stagger their planting so there will always be tulips blooming throughout the season for their visitors to see. The commercial farms, will chop the tulip flowers off before the season ends to make sure the plant puts its energy into the bulb and not the flower. These farmers are actually cultivating the bulbs and not the flowers. Therefore, it is possible you could arrive after this chop and be looking at empty farmers fields wondering where all the tulips have gone! So, it is a fingers crossed moment to some extent near the end of the season.
Keukenhof Gardens opens 20 March until 11 May in 2025.
Amsterdam Flower Festivals and Events
There are a number of hugely popular flower events and festivals held every year in and around Amsterdam.
National Tulip Day
National Tulip Day is marked by the creation of a temporary tulip garden in Dam Square. It is filled with 200,000 tulips and once open (1-4pm) all visitors can pick a tulip free of charge and take it home. This special day marks the start of tulip season in the Netherlands. National Tulip Day is on 18 January in 2025.

Flower Parade Bloemencorso Bollenstreek. The Flower Parade itself is on Saturday 12 April 2025. It starts at 9.30am in Noordwijk and then slowly makes its way through various towns to end up in Harlaam at around 9pm. You can watch the parade from three grandstands in Lisse, Hillegom and Sassenheim.
This parade is often mistakenly called the Keukenhof Flower Parade as it runs through the Keukenhof area on its journey. This though is a good opportunity to see the parade and the magnificient gardens and tulip fields all in one go. This might go someway to explaining why there are often over a million visitors attending each years spectacle.
This years parade is the 78th Anniversary celebration.
If you miss the actual parade, the floats all stay in Harlaam on Sunday 13 April, so you can go take a close look at them then too.
One of the best ways to see this amazing event is by helicopter. You can enjoy incredible views from the air, looking down at the parade, Keukenhof Gardens and the tulip fields. These flights are for 30 minutes. These helicopter flights over the tulip fields in Amsterdam also run at limited times during the season too. Use our link below to book and find out more.
