Amsterdams Hostels
Amsterdams Hostels offer great value and facilities
Amsterdams hostels cover a wide remit of needs. Some are so well equipped they can barely be called hostels in the old sense of the word. Most now are cleverly designed, have excellent facilities, are very safe and a destination in themselves.
You’ll find hostels in the busiest parts of Amsterdam like the Red Light District, Dam Square and Leidseplein, but also hostels in quieter locations on the outskirts.

Amsterdams hostels for everyone
There are specialist hostels like Hostelle which is exclusively for women and party hostels that feature bars and nightclubs as part of the facilities. Well-known brands like Amsterdam Flying Pig hostels and Amsterdam Generator hostels also feature here.
We have also found some quirky hostels, like the Train Lodge which is housed in an old night train and an Outside Inn Hostel that features various caravans and beach huts.
Solo travel to Amsterdam
Often solo travellers have to pay extra rates in hotels for solo occupancy. You can avoid that in a hostel, which is why you will find such a diverse mix of people using hostels as their accommodation. Solo travel to Amsterdam can feel less lonely and more connected in a hostel, as opposed to a hotel. Many hostels will have specific rooms/rates for solo travellers.
Cheap Hostels Amsterdam
Amsterdams hostels are not just for the budget conscious, although saving money clearly helps, they are for everyone who is looking for good places to stay, to socialise and have plenty to do whilst staying. You can choose private rooms with own shower/wc or save even more with dormitory style accomodation.
Another option to consider if on a budget is Amsterdam Campsites which offer you very cheap accommodation and a more nature/city balance to your stay. The budget hotels in Amsterdam also offer the opportunity for savings and some have shared dormitory style rooms like hostels.
Amsterdams hostels offer a wide selection of locations throughout the city, some of which we have explored below. You’ll find further details within the well-known HostelWorld itself after each link.
Amsterdams Hostels to explore

Located in the city centre close to Centraal Station (10-min walk) and Dam Square (5-min walk). You can explore easily on foot from here or use the close by trams and metro.
Choose from private rooms with private bathrooms or dormitory style rooms with shared facilities. The property is made up of two buildings, the rear of which has canal views. Breakfast is included with the room price.
Highly rated by previous guests.
Hostelle Amsterdam
Hostelle is a women only hostel located in the south east of Amsterdam. It is close by to the Johan Cruijff ArenA which might also make it an ideal place to stay if you are going to a concert there.
Although slightly further out from the city centre, it is an easy hop onto the nearby Metro to get into the city (15-mins to Centraal Station). This ‘hostelle’ is designed for women with shared dormitories and plenty of facilities and that all important feeling of safety and community.
Generator Hostel Amsterdam
Set inside the old zoological university building, the Generator Hostel has everything you’d need for a visit to Amsterdam. The hostel itself has a cafe, bar, library and basement nightclub, free Wi-Fi and bikes for hire. You can stay in private rooms, shared and even pods.
Located in the East of Amsterdam, overlooking the beautiful Oosterpark, giving you plenty of local green space and easy access to the city centre.
Train Lodge Amsterdam
For something a little different why not stay on a train? This train doesn’t move but has reimagined the carriages to create an unusual but practical space for the budget traveller.
Located very close to Sloterdijk Station, which is a key arrival and departure spot in Amsterdam. Being so close to the station also gives you very easy access to the city centre.
Hans Brinker Hostel Amsterdam
Lively and popular hostel located close to Leidesplein, one of Amsterdam’s main nightlife hotspots. You’ll have your choice of bars and restuarants and can take a short walk to the Museumplein for the art museums and Vondelpark. Head the other way and you can get into the centre of the old town very quickly.
Hans Brinker Hostel has its own bar (with happy hour), free Wi-Fi and an underground club. You can stay here in a private room or in dorms. This is a place to go for cheap accommodation in a great location, but don’t expect long, deep sleeps as this is a busy, fun seekers place.
St Christopher at Winstons Amsterdam Hostel
If you are looking to stay near the Red Light District and Dam Square and close to Central Station then this hostel will fit you perfectly.
Situated in the heart of Amsterdam, St Christopher at Winstons certainly delivers on entertainment, with its own bar that features in a pub crawl, free walking tour of the local area, its own beer garden and a nightclub downstairs.
Free ear plugs are given to guests which will give you a clue as to the type of hostel you are staying in, but St Christopher’s has previously been voted the most popular hostel in Amsterdam and continues to receive rave reviews.
Flying Pig Downtown
Another hostel close to the Red Light District and Dam Square and just a 5-min walk from Central Station. This hostel offers both private and dorm accommodation, guest kitchen, luggage storage, free Wi-Fi and a popular bar with live DJ sets.
Stepping outside the hostel you will find a busy shopping street and many, many cafes, restaurants and coffee shops. There is plenty to do in the area both day and night making The Flying Pig Downton a very popular hostel.
Outside Inn Hostel Amsterdam
A new concept in hostels that features vintage caravans and beach houses inside an old industrial building. Sounds quirky and is with the hostel pitching on its insta worthiness.
Around 10-15-mins from Schiphol Airport and to the south of Amsterdam centre this is a place to come and enjoy a different hostel experience with easy access to the city centre from the nearby train station.
Although new, the reviews are favourable and might suit the traveller looking for something a bit different and more laid back.
